SAUNDARANANDA 4.40: Nanda In Two Minds

nandaH prayaaNaM prati tatvare ca
vivRtta-dRShTish ca shanair yayau taaM
kar" iiva pashyan sa laDat-kareNuM

With his mind gripped by his desire to see the Sage, however,

Nanda hurried his exit;

And then he went ponderously,
and with backward glances,

Like an elephant watching a playful she-elephant.

But Nanda both hurried to start with mind drawn by desire to see the Sage and at the same time went slowly with backturned gaze, looking at her as a bull-elephant looks at a sportive cow-elephant.
